The Constant Gardeners is a robotic public art installation by Jason Bruges Studio. The innovative installation uses live data from the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to create striking works of art. Blending art, sport, computing, and the ancient tradition of the Japanese Zen garden, the Constant Gardeners is a performative piece.
A team of four robots rakes patterns into a canvas of crushed black basalt, combining Japanese tradition with technological developments. The robots create illustrations to communicate and celebrate the motion and physicality in professional athletics. The robots, also referred to as the gardeners, collectively portray 150 unique illustrations throughout their daily performances. While some are tasked to portray the story of an event unfolding over time, others depict a single noteworthy sporting moment.
