AI-Driven Ceramic Art

Vera Van Der Burg’s Text-To-Clay Project Uses Ai to Generate Ceramic Forms

The Text-to-Clay project by Vera van der Burg explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and traditional ceramic practice through a circular process that moves between language, data, and material outcomes. Over a residency period, van der Burg trained a custom AI model on an annotated dataset of her earlier ceramic works, using emotional and descriptive phrases such as “ceramic sadness” to generate novel sculptural forms. These AI outputs were then translated back into physical clay forms, creating pieces and images that document the dialogue between algorithmic suggestion and hands-on making.

This process highlights the material unpredictability of clay alongside the generative capacity of machine learning models trained on subjective creative work. High-gloss metallic elements appear in some of the resulting forms, contrasting with the tactile and variable surface qualities of the clay composites. The project also incorporated display elements showing stages of material production, with pendant lights arranged over pedestals holding raw shell fragments and framed samples of the base material.
