There are elaborate surreal portraits and then there are simple surreal portraits. Aisha Zeijpveld, a photographer based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, focuses on the latter in order to delight people in unexpected ways. In many cases, the images look normal. Yet almost immediately, people will pick up on an absurd quality such as too many limbs or atypical hair and more.
One of the reasons the surreal portraits aren't so blatant is the fact that they are quiet and unadorned. Shot in studio against solid colored backdrops and captured in soft muted hues, the surreal portraits pushes the boundaries of quirkiness in a very modern way. According to the photographer herself, she presents her subjects' "nakedness and vulnerability yet simultaneously their potency and pride." It is important to note that her illusions are crafted by hand, not Photoshop.
