SpaceX introduced Starlink Direct to Cell, a satellite-to-phone service that currently supports commercial messaging and is intended to expand to IoT connectivity, mobile data and voice. Built on Starlink’s global satellite constellation, the service works with mobile operator partners through a roaming-style model that uses existing LTE spectrum.
Commercial messaging is available in the U.S. and New Zealand, while SpaceX has also tested the technology with Australian operators, including Optus. The current service supports outdoor text messaging when a compatible phone is outside terrestrial coverage and has a clear view of the sky. Indoor coverage, mobile data, voice calls and broader capacity remain limited, although SpaceX plans to expand the network using larger V3 satellites.
For consumers, Starlink Direct to Cell offers a satellite-backed connection for remote areas and mobile dead zones. The service reflects the growing collaboration between satellite providers and domestic telecom companies to extend rural coverage while raising new regulatory and infrastructure questions.
