Rocket Lab agreed to acquire Iridium Communications in a cash-and-stock transaction valuing the satellite network operator at $8 billion. The deal combines Rocket Lab’s launch and spacecraft manufacturing capabilities with Iridium’s established low Earth orbit constellation, spectrum assets and global communications infrastructure.
The combined company plans to expand direct-to-device services, including Iridium NTN Direct, for maritime, aviation, government and industrial customers operating beyond reliable terrestrial coverage. Rocket Lab is also expected to use its in-house launch capabilities to support constellation replenishment, accelerate new service deployments and reduce reliance on external launch providers.
For enterprises and public agencies, the integration could improve the resilience and scalability of satellite connectivity while supporting smartphones and IoT devices that switch between terrestrial networks and LEO relays. The transaction also strengthens access to backup positioning, navigation and timing services when GNSS coverage is disrupted.
