On-Flight Live Television Streaming

United Airlines and DIRECTV Partner to Offer a New Service

United Airlines, in collaboration with DIRECTV, has introduced a live television streaming service on Starlink-enabled seatback screens. This new offering is expected to be available on as many as 150 aircraft through July 20.

The live television streaming service allows passengers to watch real-time broadcasts of sports, news, and entertainment during their flights. United Airlines and DIRECTV deliver complimentary access to over a dozen channels, including major networks such as FOX, ABC, ESPN, CBS, NBC, TNT, TBS, and BBC. In doing so, the companies ensure travelers can stay connected to the FIFA World Cup, as well as other sporting events, weather updates, and business coverage throughout their journey.

DIRECTV's live television streaming service leverages the high-speed, low-latency capabilities of Starlink's satellite-based Wi-Fi, which United Airlines is actively deploying across its fleet.

Satellite-powered Connectivity
Low-latency satellite Wi-Fi is reshaping expectations for airborne media, enabling premium digital services that previously depended on unreliable aircraft internet.
Complimentary Travel Entertainment
Ad-supported or partner-funded content models can transform in-flight screens into high-value engagement channels without adding direct passenger fees.

Who This Affects Most

Airlines
Fleetwide connected entertainment systems position carriers to compete on digital experience quality as much as routes, loyalty perks, and cabin service.
Media and Broadcasting
Live channel distribution in aircraft cabins expands audience reach for broadcasters during major events, business news cycles, and appointment-viewing moments.
Satellite Internet
Aviation deployments demonstrate how high-speed satellite networks can unlock commercial use cases beyond basic connectivity, from streaming media to real-time passenger services.
