Traditional canvases can be boring, and add very little in terms of overall value to an art piece, which is exactly why Sooyeong Lee’s distinctive creations stand out from her contemporaries.
Taking old and textured pieces of wood, Sooyeong Lee essentially makes her own canvases in what appears to be a marriage of fine art skills and a penchant for the game Tetris. This idiosyncratic style is employed to extremes in her painting 'Tree’s Visit,' where she utilizes somewhere in the neighborhood of 60 wooden pieces to form her final image. Add to that a mastery of a whimsical and child-like illustrative style, and you have a collection of works that are a certified crowd-pleaser.
Fans of Sooyeong Lee’s paintings will be thrilled to know that her artwork will be appearing at the Ouchi Gallery in New York during the month of this coming January, where the theme of the exhibition will be love.
