Rustenberg-based company 'Rethaka' recently debuted a solar-powered bag that can provide a source of light for poverty-stricken communities around the world. In many parts of the world, children are unable to do their homework at night because they lack a reliable source of light. This multipurpose backpack provides an affordable and sustainable alternative to using dangerous kerosene lamps.
The solar-powered bag is called the 'Repurpose Schoolbag' and it functions by charging throughout the day. When a child returns home from school, they simply unscrew the solar light from the exterior of the bag and then attach it to a glass jar. This handy device allows children to create a functional lamp that can be transported throughout the home. The solar light ensures that children are able to do their homework at night, without resorting to the use of kerosene lamps.
