Next-Gen SSD Controllers

SIlicon Motion Launched its First PCIe 6.0 SSD Controller

The SM8466, marketed under Silicon Motion’s MonTitan series, is the company’s first SSD controller to support a PCIe 6.0 x4 host interface and is positioned for enterprise and data-center applications. Fabricated on TSMC’s 4 nm process node, the controller integrates 16 NAND channels compatible with next-generation 3D TLC and QLC memory. It delivers sequential read throughput of up to 28 GB/s and peak random read/write performance reaching 7 million IOPS. The SM8466 is compliant with NVMe 2.0+ and the OCP NVMe SSD Specification 2.5, ensuring interoperability and feature alignment with hyperscale storage deployments.

Alongside its raw performance metrics, the SM8466 offers a comprehensive suite of enterprise-grade capabilities. These include support for single-connector SCA interfaces, SR-IOV and MPF virtualization, multiple namespaces, SMART health monitoring, and end-to-end data protection. Security features encompass Secure Boot, AES-256 encryption, TCG Opal compliance, and firmware attestation. With support for up to 512 TB of NAND capacity, Silicon Motion’s partners are expected to introduce SM8466-based SSDs in late 2026 to early 2027, targeting high-performance computing, artificial intelligence, and large-scale analytics workloads.
