Self-Heating Batteries

This Self-Heating Battery Ably Overcomes Harsh Winter Weather

A group of scientists over at Penn State University have come up with a highly innovative self-heating battery that is capable of working smoothly without any issues even in cold winter weather.

The lithium-ion battery is fitted with special nickel foil and embedded with a temperature sensor that redirects current through the foil, warming the battery from the inside. Once the battery returns to a temperature above freezing level, the self-heating function switches off and the battery continues operating normally.

This self-heating battery has a whole array of potential applications and could be used in space missions, drones and even regular electric cars that are at risk of suffering decreased performance in extremely cold weather.
