Clean the Sky - Positive Eco Trends & Breakthroughs

The Seki-Han Floor and Pendant Light is by Afra and Tobia Scarpa

— April 14, 2026 — Art & Design
The Seki-Han is a lighting design by Afra and Tobia Scarpa for FLOS, originally introduced in 1963 and produced for a limited period. The piece is defined by two slender wooden blades that frame a central light source, creating a linear form with controlled diffusion. The structure references the shape of rice grains, with material and proportion guiding the overall composition. Lumens is now introducing the design to the U.S. market for the first time through a reissued version.

The updated model replaces the original neon tube with integrated LED technology, producing a warmer and more consistent output. Sustainably sourced ash is used in place of earlier timber, while the proportions have been adjusted to increase height and refine the vertical profile. The system is also available as a horizontal suspension variant, expanding its application beyond the original floor format while maintaining the same structural logic.

Trend Themes
1. Heritage Design Reissues - Reintroductions of midcentury designs with contemporary materials and tech create demand for limited-edition, provenance-driven products and reinterpretations.
2. Timber-based Minimalist Lighting - Slender wooden blades and biomimetic proportions foreground material-led minimalism that enables lightweight, warm, and tactile luminaires with distinctive silhouettes.
3. LED Integration in Classic Forms - Replacing legacy light sources with integrated LEDs yields warmer, more consistent outputs and allows designers to refine proportions and introduce horizontal and vertical variants.
Industry Implications
1. Residential Lighting - Refined vertical profiles and suspension options expand application possibilities in homes seeking sculptural yet functional lighting statements.
2. Sustainable Furniture Manufacturing - Use of sustainably sourced ash and proportion refinement signals opportunities for eco-premium product lines that emphasize material traceability and craftsmanship.
3. Hospitality and Retail Design - Reissued iconic luminaires offer opportunities to create differentiated ambient experiences and reinforce brand storytelling through curated, heritage-driven fixtures.
