Volvo Cosmic Surfer Concept Introduces Gravity-Adaptive Wheel System

Volvo’s Cosmic Surfer concept presents a lunar exploration vehicle designed with a low, wide body and oversized multi-lobed wheels. Developed by Sampad Chaulia for the Volvo Design Competition 2026, the vehicle features a steel-blue exterior with co-branded detailing referencing The North Face. The structure combines angular surfacing with a continuous, monolithic silhouette, including a full-width rear light bar and a tapered glass cabin integrated into the body.

The concept’s wheel system uses inflatable outer lobes arranged around a geometric alloy core, forming a deformable structure that reshapes on contact with uneven terrain. The design incorporates a compliance-based approach to traction, with each wheel assembly constructed to adapt to varied surface conditions. The vehicle is positioned as a speculative 2040 concept for off-world exploration, with a focus on extreme-environment mobility and structural resilience.

Gravity-adaptive Mobility
Vehicle systems that autonomously adjust structural and traction parameters to varying gravitational fields, promising new approaches to locomotion in low-gravity environments.
Inflatable-deformable Wheels
Inflatable multi-lobed wheel architectures that deform on impact to conform to irregular substrates, offering resilience and puncture-tolerant mobility on regolith.
Compliance-based Traction Systems
Locomotion designs that rely on material and geometric compliance for traction, reducing dependence on complex suspension and active control in unpredictable terrains.

Who This Affects Most

Lunar and Off-world Transportation
Design and manufacturing of crewed and uncrewed vehicles for the Moon and other bodies, where adaptive wheel and body systems could redefine mission profiles and payload strategies.
Extreme-environment Infrastructure
Support systems and habitats engineered to operate under abrasive, low-gravity, and temperature-extreme conditions, benefiting from deformable mobility components that lower maintenance demands.
Aerospace Vehicle Design
Aircraft and spacecraft structural design disciplines integrating monolithic silhouettes and adaptive contact systems, which can influence mass distribution and thermal management strategies.
