An amazing piece of performance art entitled 'I used to' by artist Sarah Sanders explores identity, time and memory. Sanders worked in an aging building and ritualistically wrote on the floor using chalk. As she progressed through the building, she wrote sentences that begin with "I used to" over and over again.
Each sentence that was written out revealed a different aspect of Sander's life. Every statement explored things that she used to do in an exercise of self-examination. The artist continued to write a self narrative until she blanketed an entire space. At the end, the entire floor was covered with Sander's neat scrawl. Statements like "I used to enjoy watching comedy" and "I used to do meaningful things" were drawn on the building's floor.
