A significant architectural development has been completed at Saint Joseph's Oratory of Mount Royal in Montreal with the inauguration of a new Welcome Pavilion, designed by the firm Lemay as part of a long-term master plan for the historic site. The four-story structure is conceived as a contemporary intervention that mediates between the iconic religious landmark and its natural hillside setting. The Welcome Pavilion seeks to enhance the visitor experience for over two million annual guests.
Key features of the building include a new bell tower housing a sixty-two-bell carillon and a series of interior spaces, such as a cafeteria and gardens, designed to foster contemplation. Lemay utilized locally sourced stone in gabion walls to create a visual and tactile connection to the mountain. The project has been executed with a focus on universal accessibility and sustainable design principles, having achieved LEED Silver certification through strategies like green roofs, energy-efficient systems, and the reduction of paved surfaces.
