Sailing Lantern Designs

Jony Ive Crafts a Lantern After Failing to Find One Fitting His Yacht

Jony Ive has turned necessity into craft by designing a Sailing Lantern when none existed that matched his requirements. The object, created through his studio LoveFrom in collaboration with Balmuda, answers his demand for a durable, beautiful solution built for maritime life.

The lantern combines marine-grade stainless steel and precision-ground glass with a single dial that controls brightness and color temperature, mimicking the natural transitions of flame. It weighs about 1.5 kg and is engineered to resist salt air, wind, and wear. Limited to a run of 1,000 units, the release is framed not as a mere gadget but as a design artifact rooted in Ive’s lifelong affinity for sailing. The project underscores his belief that beautiful tools arise from solving real problems, not from aesthetics alone.
