Based on the children's book of the same name, 'Raising Dion' is a new Netflix series that reinvents what it means to be a superhero. Following a single mother and son, the series showcases the drama of single parenthood, all of which is amplified when the titular character begins to develop superpowers. This is actually the second time Raising Dion has appeared on the screen as a 2015 short film created by music video director Dennis Liu. Liu will also serve as executive producer on this Netflix series.
At the core of Raising Dion is the story of a struggling family and the ups and downs of their lives. According to Liu, the purpose of the series is to "create a cinematic experience for all families that will lift your spirits and make you laugh and cry.” The inclusion of superpowers works to showcase an extreme example of difficult parenthood, while also providing a distinct view of how different people may live.
A trailer has yet to be released for the series but the original short film is clearly inspired by superhero film trailers.
