Rex Skov Arkitekter Explores the Potential of Seaweed in Architecture

The potential of seaweed as a primary material in fashion, design, and architecture has been probed by professionals working in these respective industries. Most recently, the Danish studio Rex Skov Arkitekter probed the potential of seaweed as a sustainable building material during the Chart Art Fair in Copenhagen. Called the Biosack pavilion, this structure was one of five temporary pavilions that engaged in bio-material exploration.

The Biosack pavilion's skeleton is made out of laminated timber. The material was sustainably and thoughtfully "salvaged from a social housing project in Odense, Denmark." The most striking feature of Rex Skov Arkitekter's structure is that it is topped with a seaweed roof. This is a reference to the "traditional architectural typology specific to the Danish island of Læsø."
