Wrinkled Plastic Film-Wrapped Furniture

Paul Coenen

Dutch designer Paul Coenen has presented a new collection of furniture and lighting that was presented during Dutch Design Week. The products use plastic film wrapped around the silhouettes to create a wrinkled pattern on top of the anodized aluminum surface. The designer experimented with this after seeing the possibility of creating patterned aluminum surfaces when seeing a gradient sample by BWB Surface Technology.

He used a hand-dyeing process to color a coffee table and lamp, followed by a stool. Coenen speaks about the design concept behind the furniture to Dezeen, sharing "The idea behind the shrink-wrap is that applying it onto the wet dye makes the dye flow into the creases. Outside of the creases the dye is pushed away. Where more dye stays; in the crease, the aluminium gets a deeper, darker colour."
