UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt Debut Paper-Based Packagings

UPM Specialty Materials and Paramelt introduced a bio-based paper food packaging concept designed for greasy bakery, fast-food and convenience items, featuring a paper substrate with a renewable coating to resist oil and moisture. The collaboration combined UPM’s paper expertise with Paramelt’s coating formulation to create a compostable-forward structure that aims to improve end-of-life outcomes.

Prototype samples showed grease resistance comparable to conventional laminates while relying on bio-sourced polymers rather than fossil-based plastics. The partners positioned the concept to work with existing converting lines, and testing focused on sealability, printability and barrier performance.

For consumers and operators, the packaging promises easier disposal and reduced plastic contamination in recycling streams, aligning with demand for lower-impact takeaway solutions and circular-material trends in foodservice.
