Paint-On Biosensor Inks

The Paint-On Conductive Ink is a Wearable Biosensing Technology

The paint-on conductive ink is a wearable biosensing technology developed by researchers at Pennsylvania State University for recording electrical signals directly from the skin. The conductive polymer-based formulation creates custom electrodes for electrocardiography (ECG), electromyography (EMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) without adhesive patches. Based on PEDOT with additives that improve stretchability, durability and adhesion, the ink dries within minutes, conforms closely to the skin and can be mixed with food-grade pigments to produce coloured electrode designs.

Laboratory testing showed the electrodes delivered diagnostic-quality ECG, EMG and EEG recordings while remaining attached for more than 12 hours during daily activity and exercise. The painted sensors can stretch to approximately 170% of their original size before failure and are removed by washing, allowing the electronic sensing module to be reused.
