The OpenDesk Allows People to Partake in the Production Process

— August 20, 2013 — Art & Design
The do-it-yourself culture has not yet died down and it doesn't look like it will be anytime soon, especially since it means saving a few bucks here and there; OpenDesk is the latest iteration of such line of thinking. OpenDesk allows people to step in at any point of production to take over, be it from the very get-go or at the assembling stage.

Conceived by Joni Steiner, OpenDesk is comprised of different furniture pieces, the schematics of which are available as free downloadable digital files. If a person has access to materials and a CNC machine, they can create their own OpenDesk from scratch. If not, they can either purchase the flatpack components or buy the more hassle-free ready-made OpenDesk.

Trend Themes

  1. Open-source Production — OpenDesk is an example of the growing trend of open-source production where people can participate in the production process.
  2. DIY Furniture — OpenDesk showcases the continued popularity of the do-it-yourself culture, especially when it comes to furniture.
  3. Sustainable Manufacturing — OpenDesk's use of digital files and local production is a reflection of the push for more sustainable manufacturing practices.

Industry Implications

  2. Digital Fabrication — OpenDesk relies heavily on digital fabrication, therefore opening up opportunities for those in the digital fabrication industry to provide services and support.
  3. Sustainability — OpenDesk's sustainable manufacturing practices are relevant to companies that prioritize eco-friendly production and have a strong CSR policy.
