The OAS/S-AETHER is a sculptural light installation created by Zhide Architectural Design Consulting for the "Migratory Birds 300" section of the 2026 Aranya Theater Festival in Qinhuangdao, China. The work combines interconnected metal rods, illuminated acrylic lightboxes, engraved copper plates and living plants into a wing-like structure inspired by the classical concept of Aether, the fifth element. Positioned along the coastline, the installation responds to changing daylight and evening illumination, altering its appearance throughout the day.
The installation forms part of ZDC's ongoing OAS/S series, which explores temporary architectural structures within natural landscapes. Sunlight projects shifting shadows across the surrounding sand, while illuminated acrylic panels transform the structure into a glowing landmark after dark. Living vegetation integrated within the lightboxes introduces an organic element that contrasts with the industrial materials, reinforcing the relationship between nature and constructed form.

Key Themes Behind This Trend
- Temporary Coastal Architecture
- Ephemeral structures in shoreline settings create new potential for low-impact cultural landmarks that shift with tides, light and seasonal tourism patterns.
- Bio-integrated Lighting
- Combining living plants with illuminated materials points to immersive design concepts where lighting doubles as ecological storytelling and sensory placemaking.
- Day-to-night Installations
- Light-responsive public artworks suggest fresh models for attractions that maintain visual relevance across changing daylight conditions and evening programming.
Where This Applies
- Experiential Design
- Festival environments benefit from sculptural interventions that merge art, architecture and landscape into memorable visitor experiences with strong visual identity.
- Public Art
- Site-specific installations along natural landscapes expand opportunities for civic and cultural projects that connect audiences to place through dynamic material expression.
- Architectural Lighting
- Adaptive illumination systems embedded in sculptural forms reveal possibilities for transforming temporary structures into functional beacons and atmospheric destinations.
