Time Passage-Celebrating Restored Homes

NYAWA Restores a Traditional Timber Home in Toyama

Architecture studio NYAWA's latest project is restoring and updating what was once an original timber home located in Toyama, Japan. It now functions as a holiday home where those who stay will be able to 'feel the passage of time.' The owner wanted to create a holiday rental space that would feature elements of the local climate and culture whilst highlighting safety. It was also important to update the building so that it would be resilient to earthquakes.

Founder of NYAWA, Yoh Miyashita speaks to Dezeen about the design approach, stating "Retaining and showing the old wooden structure, including the roofing system, gives a sense of the long passage of time in this house. [However], we thought that simply leaving the old things and cleaning them up would not complete what is comfortable for people today."
