Nicholas Hemingway pencils are a trio of solid metal clutch pencils made from copper and brass bar stock rather than hollow tubes or plastic bodies. The 10th anniversary release includes a 5.6-millimeter Copper and Brass Hybrid for shading and life drawing, plus 2-millimeter Precision models in brass and copper for drafting and fine-line work. Each pencil is machined in Hemingway’s London workshop on a manual lathe, with the weight and forward balance designed to reduce hand pressure during extended use.
The pencils use a simple clutch mechanism that releases and locks the lead without springs or plastic internals. The 5.6-millimeter version also has a lead sharpener built into the push button, while all three models accept standard 2-millimeter or 5.6-millimeter leads. Hemingway leaves the C101 copper and 360 brass raw, so both surfaces develop a patina over time through handling and use.

What Makes This Trend Stand Out
- Solid Metal Construction
- Heavy, single-piece copper and brass bodies enable precision balance and tactile feedback that challenge lightweight plastic norms in handheld tools.
- Patina-as-design
- Leaving metals raw so surfaces age and develop unique patinas positions wear and personalization as a desirable product feature rather than a defect.
- Minimal Mechanical Internals
- Simple clutch mechanisms without springs or plastic components highlight longevity and serviceability as competitive differentiators in small precision devices.
Sectors Adopting This
- Stationery and Writing Instruments
- High-end metal pencils redefine premium writing tools by prioritizing balance, material longevity, and tactile quality for discerning professionals.
- Art and Illustration Tools
- Artists benefit from weighted, durable drawing implements that reduce hand fatigue and support diverse media sizes from fine-line drafting to broad shading.
- Luxury Handcrafted Goods
- Small-batch, lathe-machined copper and brass items create opportunities for artisanal brands to market provenance, craft narrative, and aging aesthetics.
