Danish architecture firm BIG expands what was once an Aldi supermarket in North Jutland to form the Museum of Paper Art in its place. It is defined by its folded roof that replicates the look of a sheet of paper. The structure is being developed by the firm with the help of Bit Vejle to honor the history of paper art in the country.
Partner at BIG, David Zahle shares, "In collaboration with Bit, we have designed a simple concept that allows a single sheet of paper to drape over the site and the existing building." Studio founder Bjarke Ingels continues, "By treating the roof surface as such – a single sheet of folded paper – existing and new functions are brought together in one unifying gesture. An obsolete supermarket finds new life under the floating curved roof."
