Thoughtfully Contemporary Museum Designs

Innauer-Matt Architekten designed the Museum Bezau, and the project represents a thoughtful integration of historical preservation and contemporary architectural intervention. Located in Austria’s Bregenzerwald region, the development revitalizes a heritage-listed structure by introducing a modern timber extension that respects the traditional layout of local vernacular architecture. The three-story addition complements the original building while providing functional spaces for visitor reception, exhibitions, and small events.

Through a deliberate interplay of light and dark, open and enclosed areas, the design creates a dynamic spatial experience that enhances the Museum Bezau's narrative depth. The use of regionally sourced materials, such as spruce flooring and ash wood furnishings, reinforces the connection to local craftsmanship, while the prefabricated timber construction demonstrates a commitment to sustainable building practices.

History enthusiasts would be drawn to the seamless dialogue between the preserved historic structure and its modern counterpart.
