Modern Floodproof Residences

Dom Architect Studio Has Built a Multi-Layered Oasis in Vietnam

Dom Architect Studio has transformed a Vietnamese home into a functional and contemporary single-family unit. The home was designed as a multi-layered space made up of horizontal layers. The first layer houses the auxiliary spaces - such as the garage, bathroom, staircase, and outdoor gardens. The second layer includes the main entrance and kitchen, while the third layer houses a large garden and porch. The living room is located in the center of the home and features retractable windows and high ceilings to open up the space.

The elevation design was carefully studied as extreme flooding occurs yearly in Vietnam - hence why the auxiliary spaces are placed at the lowest ground height. On the other hand, the main spaces such as the kitchen and bedrooms are placed higher to stay protected.

The homeowner is a photographer who is deeply captivated by raw materials, hence informing the material choice for the home - bare bricks, grindstones, natural wood, and bare concrete.
