FICT Uses Traditional Techniques to Make Mother of Pearl Objects

South Korea's FICT design studio uses traditional techniques to create beautiful mother of pearl objects.

Using a technique called 'jagae' with a modern twist, the design team is able to make sophisticated and elegant coasters and trays. Jagae is a traditional Korean technique of lacquering carefully cut pieces of pearl to produce beautifully intricate designs. FICT's designs are unique in that the result is more scattered and not meant to hold a pattern to make an image. Chips of mother of pearl are suspended in resin on the tray, and the edges of the tray are then wrapped with a gold-plated or stainless steel band. Additionally, light bounces off the pieces, drawing the eye in.

These gorgeous mother of pearl objects seamlessly integrate traditional techniques with a modern aesthetic.
