Shapeshifting Roguelike Mechanics

Ubisoft And Screen Juice Launch Morbid Metal On Early Access

Morbid Metal is an action roguelike launched to Steam Early Access by Ubisoft and indie developer Screen Juice, evolving from Felix Schade’s 2017 university project and featuring a real-time shapeshifting mechanic that lets players switch between three characters: Flux, Ekku, and Vekta. The system embeds distinct combat styles and signature "Protocols," designed to keep encounters fast and reactive while offering strategic variety during runs.

The Early Access build shipped with three biomes, ten enemy archetypes, mid-run systems like the Emporium and Devil Bargains, plus a persistent Void Nexus skill tree that stores permanent progression between attempts. Plans for more biomes, characters and possible console ports were set to be revealed in a roadmap during the Find Your Next Game showcase; the title launched with a discounted entry price to help new players sample its loop.

Real-time Shapeshifting Gameplay
A mechanic that allows instant switching between distinct characters and combat styles creates opportunities for emergent meta-gameplay and deeper player skill expression.
Persistent Roguelike Progression
By combining run-based permadeath loops with a persistent skill tree, developers can enable long-term player investment while preserving high-risk, short-session dynamics.
Mid-run Transactional Systems
In-run features like Devil Bargains and temporary shops introduce layered decision economies that can reshape player risk–reward calculations and monetization design.
