Canoes are often rustic and understated, but Borromeo & De Silva decided to ignore this idea when it designed the exquisite Monocoque Paddle Canoe. The Milan-based design firm was inspired to create this luxury piece as a way to showcase its ability to blend traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques and technical materials. The hull of the canoe features a carbon fiber construction with fine copper wire woven into the it. The use of copper gives the piece depth and is meant to shimmer under the sunlight in the same way light reflects off water.
The deck of the Monocoque Paddle Canoe is made from hand-laid teak wood, done by one of the oldest and most revered craftsman in Genoa. The deck features a streamlined design that also features a space for the paddles to tuck into the side, which was also a design feature meant to pay homage to the rear fins of classic Cadillac cars.
