Tactile Light Fixtures

Studio 5.5's Volt Face Turns Switches into Furniture

Studio 5.5's Volt Face lets people switch on lamps and furnishings through the same sockets and switches they usually overlook. Made for Schneider Electric, the project reshapes parts from the Odace range into usable objects while keeping those components working as intended.

A wall light and a bedside table place the switch hardware where hands naturally land, so turning them on becomes part of using the piece. That audible click gives the objects a multisensory edge, while the repositioned Odace parts draw attention to finish and texture instead of disappearing into the wall.

For the category, Volt Face treats electrical hardware as a starting material rather than a finishing touch. That opens a more playful path for designers and interior architects who want industrial parts to behave like modular building blocks.

Tactile Interfaces
Everyday controls gain renewed relevance as sensory touchpoints, creating space for products that make clicks, textures, and hand placement part of the user experience.
Functional Decor
Furniture and fixtures are increasingly blending utility with ornament, suggesting new opportunities for household objects that perform practical roles while serving as expressive design features.
Modular Hardware Design
Standardized electrical components are being reframed as adaptable building blocks, enabling more flexible product ecosystems across interiors, lighting, and connected home environments.

Who This Affects Most

Lighting
Light fixtures can evolve beyond illumination into interactive furnishings that integrate controls, materials, and tactile feedback as core design elements.
Furniture
Tables, shelves, and other home pieces are positioned to incorporate electrical infrastructure directly, expanding how furniture supports both function and atmosphere.
Interior Design
Residential and commercial spaces benefit from visible, customizable hardware systems that turn overlooked technical details into intentional aesthetic features.
