Mobile Viewpoint is an innovative new smartphone app, developed with input from the BBC's news gathering department, that is designed to offer exceptionally reliable and useful live streaming tools designed specifically for use within the context of mobile journalism.
The app is capable of automatically taking video from smartphone cameras and encoding it with H.263 video and AAC audio, with the encoding adapted depending on the bandwidth available. The resulting content is then decoded by a server and readied for use by news stations.
Modern journalism is becoming increasingly reliant on mobile photography, which is being used by a growing number of journalists to capture multimedia content on the go. Mobile content generally isn't the same quality as content generated using professional equipment, but this will not be as much of an issue anymore thanks to Mobile Viewpoint.
