Taping Sneaker Concepts

Miyake Design Studio and Asics Introduce Hyper Taping Footwear Concept

The Hyper Taping sneaker concept is a collaborative footwear project developed by MIYAKE DESIGN STUDIO and ASICS under the “Issey Miyake Foot” initiative, rethinking conventional sports shoe construction through a study of the human foot and movement. First shown at the IM MEN Spring/Summer 2026 presentation, the concept explores a reimagined structural system that replaces traditional overlays with thick elastic bands arranged across the upper to stabilise the foot and support natural gait patterns. The elastic bands take visual and functional cues from athletic taping techniques and reinterpret ASICS’ signature stripes as integrated support elements.

The sneaker concept pairs the taping bands with a sole derived from wrestling footwear that extends into the lower portion of the upper, offering grip and hold without conventional lacing systems. The last — the foot-shaped form used in construction — was adjusted to widen the fit relative to its wrestling origins, and cushioning elements such as SPEVA midsole materials and an Ortholite sock liner are incorporated for everyday comfort.

Taping-inspired Structural Uppers
Reimagining overlays as elastic support bands presents opportunities to create modular, biomechanically tuned uppers that combine visual identity with adaptive stabilization.
Lacing-free Fastening Systems
Systems that replace traditional laces with integrated straps and sole-anchored holds could enable seamless fit customization and reduce points of failure in everyday and performance footwear.
Hybrid Sportswear-shoe Construction
Blending garment construction techniques with shoe lasts and wrestling-derived soles signals potential for soft-structured footwear that merges apparel comfort with athletic grip and support.

Sectors Adopting This

Footwear Manufacturing
Manufacturers stand to disrupt production lines through adoption of elastic band assembly and last redesigns that lower complexity while delivering differentiated fit and function.
Sports Medicine and Orthotics
Clinicians and prosthetic developers could leverage taping-inspired architectures to create supportive devices that better mirror natural gait mechanics and reduce injury risk.
Athletic Apparel and Performance Textiles
Textile innovators may transform performance fabrics into structural elements, enabling clothing-like integration of support, breathability, and branding within footwear systems.
