Microneedle Tattoo Patches

The Microdot Tattoo is a Microneedle Tattoo Patch

The Microdot Tattoo applies permanent tattoos using a disposable microneedle patch instead of a conventional tattoo machine. Developed by CipherX, the single-use patch contains hundreds of microscopic needles made from carbon-based tattoo ink and a biodegradable biopolymer. Applied with a handheld device, the patch remains on the skin for approximately 15 minutes before the microneedles dissolve, leaving the pigment embedded beneath the surface. The tattoo gradually darkens over the following two days as the design becomes fully visible.

Currently available through CipherX pop-up events, the patch supports small designs within a 15-millimeter circular format using carbon black ink. Aftercare includes applying petroleum jelly and avoiding prolonged water exposure for the first 48 hours. The company has also identified the underlying microneedle technology as a potential platform for future medical and cosmetic applications.

Needle-free Tattooing
Disposable microneedle patches reframe body art as a lower-friction service with potential for faster application, simplified training, and more accessible pop-up retail experiences.
Dissolvable Ink Delivery
Carbon-based microneedles made with biodegradable polymers create openings for precise pigment placement systems that could extend beyond tattoos into skin-adjacent personalization and treatment formats.
Micro-format Body Art
Small circular tattoo designs support a new category of minimalist, limited-run, and event-based body art that aligns with consumers seeking convenience and subtle permanence.

Where This Applies

Tattoo Services
Traditional studios face emerging competition from compact patch-based application models that could alter pricing, staffing, hygiene protocols, and appointment expectations.
Cosmetic Technology
Microneedle tattoo platforms suggest future beauty applications where color, actives, or semi-permanent effects are delivered through controlled skin-depositing patches.
Medical Devices
The same dissolving microneedle architecture signals promise for wearable drug delivery, diagnostic marking, and minimally invasive dermatological treatment systems.
