Squished Body Captures

Viewers Will be Left Feeling Uncomfortable by Lee Materazzi

In the latest photography series by San Francisco-based artist Lee Materazzi, the creator explores body manipulation. Each of the images features a contorted body within the landscape of everyday mundane tasks and chores. The series makes reference to artists such as Charles Ray and Anna Mendieta. And, without using any digital manipulations, Materazzi states that the series, “attempts to achieve a resolution of the body’s role within contemporary art.”

The staged compositions create a truly uncanny feeling for viewers because of Materazzi's ability to unite the strange with the familiar. Moments that occur to everyone are reconstructed by Materazzi to show how contrived the human is in their natural environment. Crammed between cabinets and chairs, Lee Materazzi uses the human body to explore deeper societal ambiguities.
