Maria de la Luz Reyes is a retired university professor who has pivoted her career to writing Latino children's books, advocating for a more multi-cultural representation in youth literature. Her interest in the topic stems from the fact that she had realized a certain gap in this market early on. Being aware that "cultural relevance is an important factor that spurs children of color to heighten interest in reading," she sought out to fill the niche.
Since then, Maria de la Luz Reyes has released a number of Latino children's books, including 'Countdown to the Last Tortilla or, in Spanish, 'Cuenta atrás hasta la última tortilla.' This is a story set in the early 1950s and it touches on some important cultural habits with historic significance.
