Brooklyn-based design company Magnetic Kitchen is raising funds on Kickstarter to advance production and distribution of its laser-engraved skate decks.
The product makes use of a powerful laser to engrave patterns onto the board, rather than laminating the board with printed graphics, which is the conventional practice. The laser burns away a small layer of wood to create a beautiful embossed effect that can be both seen and felt.
The designers have been using a laser-cutting machine to engrave patterns and designs onto all kinds of objects, and recently decided to experiment with engraving detailed designs onto premium-quality wooden skate decks.
Magnetic Kitchen currently offers twelve different laser-engraved skateboard deck designs and is hoping to be able to offer more in the future.
