Remodelled Studio Resident Spaces

CRÜ Transforms a Public Laundry into the La Clara House

Spanish architecture studio CRÜ remodels what was once an old public laundry into the La Clara house, which is a home and studio for a couple residing in West Barcelona. The project takes place in the district of Les Corts, reconfiguring the old ground floor of the laundry for a resident. A studio space is designed at the front of the home, which has two stories closer to the back.

The studio notes "All existing walls and stairs are undressed to show only the entrails, to recover the stench of soap and gossip. This aesthetic choice imparts a sense of continuity and rawness, reinforcing the project's connection to the old laundry. The central courtyards, or voids, are a key aspect of the design. [They offer] an innovative solution to provide natural light and ventilation to each room while visually and spatially separating public and private areas."
