As part of his MFA thesis project at the Cranbrook Academy of Art, Detroit designer Joe Parr debuts a collection of odd furniture. The pieces boldly take inspiration from the aesthetics of the playground, with nods to swings and carousels. It is evident that the designs “defy the typical typology of furniture” and that is with a purpose. Joe Parr seeks to find a harmonious state between “furniture, playground, and gym equipment.” By striking that balance and producing a dynamic design that is meant to harbor interactive sensibilities, he will be able to create an environment that will “activate the body and encourage social behaviors.” This type of engaging furniture has definitely seen an increase in popularity amongst designers.
Joe Parr’s collection includes the Swing Seat, the Roller Sofa, and the Carousel. Each is a completely functional piece of furniture.
