Idea Collective ‘Invasion!’ box provides a hands-on learning experience for children. The makers of the kit are Lindsey Dean and Sam Castner, two artists who work together to create educational crafting kits that kids can do at home.
Invasive species are a threat to natural environments and ecosystems, which in turn also threatens various industries and the economy. This kit focuses on the spotted lanternfly, which according to the Invasive Species Centre website, is “of special concern for the fruit orchard and grape product industries.” In the box, kids will find a wooden 3-D puzzle of the lanternfly, an activity book, New York State pamphlets on prevention, and other educational tools on the unique insect.
