Ying Gao's 'Incertitudes' Are Pin-Covered and Seemingly Alive

'Incertitudes' by Ying Gao is an interesting piece of experimental fashion by Ying Gao. The garments in the Incertitudes collection is made up of two pieces, constructed from pins, PVDF and electronics. Aside from the unusual aesthetics of the garments, there's something else unique about them — they're activated by sound.

The pins that cover the garment are voice-activated and as Gao describes, "engage the spectator on a conversational level, which is filled with misunderstanding(s) and uncertainty." The artful fashions communicate issues that plagues our times: fear of missing out, concern about being in the right place at the right time and feelings of fear and uncertainty about the future.

These double-edged swords are seen in the very fabric that makes up the garments; as deceptively beautiful as the garments are from afar, they are ultimately covered in dangerously sharp pins.
