Hydrogen-Powered Combustion Engines

Toyota and Yamaha Have Created a 455 HP Hydrogen Engine

Toyota, in collaboration with Yamaha, has created a prototype hydrogen engine. This engine is a V8, eight-cylinder combustion engine that runs entirely on hydrogen fuel rather than fossil fuels such as gasoline or diesel. This is a 5-liter engine that delivers 398lb-ft of torque, meaning it is slightly smaller and weaker than the gasoline-powered alternatives.

The engine itself features a unique design with an eight-pipe exhaust layout on the top that conjoins into a large, single valve. Cars that use this engine will reportedly handle more easily than those that run on gas. The cars have an "innately friendly feel" and deliver a unique, high-pitch sound as opposed to the low grumble of a gasoline-powered V8.

Yamaha has been researching hydrogen-powered engines for several years. These engines have yet to be created in a mass-producible manner, however, there is a large potential for widespread adoption of this technology should it be refined.
