Alpine River Retreats

The Howqua River Lodge showcases Rob Mills’ off-grid residential design by arranging three timber-clad pavilions across a remote alpine valley to frame long views of forest, ridgelines, and the river below. Each pavilion is positioned to improve natural ventilation and winter solar gain, with deep eaves, careful orientation, and low-slung rooflines that help the structure sit quietly within the terrain. The project uses a restrained material palette of spotted gum, stone, and painted metal to create a calm visual identity that supports slow living in a secluded setting.

Interior spaces continue the emphasis on natural rhythm through warm timber surfaces, stone flooring, and minimal built-ins that prioritise durability and comfort. Large windows and sliding openings pull daylight deep into the rooms and maintain a steady connection to the surrounding landscape. Systems for solar power, rainwater capture, and passive climate control allow the lodge to operate independently while preserving a sense of refinement.
