Many flagship smartphones are being engineered with satellite communication functionality, which is something the HMD OffGrid aims to help make accessible to even more smartphone users. The device has a palm-sized construction that will work with any Android or iOS smartphone and will connect with the Skylo satellite network when traditional cell service isn't available. This will enable users to send and receive text messages or work effectively in an emergency to send out an SOS call.
The HMD OffGrid is built to MIL-STD-810H specifications to give it military-grade durability and has an IP68 rating to ensure it's ready for use in the great outdoors. The small device is priced at $200 and requires a subscription starting at $80 per year for up to 350 messages.
