Google GenCast Offers Ultra-Accurate Forecasts

Google GenCast has been announced by the brand as one of its latest artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tools that would provide an ultra-accurate way to predict not only everyday weather, but extreme weather conditions.

The diffusion model is similar to what users may have observed in AI image generators and has bee tuned specific;ly with the Earth's geometry in mind. The model was trained on four decades of data from the ECMWF archives before being tested extensively, which resulted in an accuracy rate of 97.2% that increased to 99.8% for longer range forecasts 36 hours or more out.

The Google GenCast model utilizes an ensemble model that produces more than 50 predictions with a range of probabilities with a 15-day forecast being generated in eight-minutes on a Google Cloud TPU v5, according to the company.
