Digital Gate Installations

Space Popular's 'Gate of Bright Lights' Boasts a Design-forward Ethos

The 'Gate of Bright Lights' is the name of an immersive digital installation by design practice Space Popular. Located at the Gwangmyeongmun Gate at Deoksugung Palace — which is a destination in Seoul with historic significance, the piece seeks to delight passers-by and solidify "South Korea's place in the modern economy."

The Gate of Bright Lights attempts to unify the past and the future in the present, as well as to create a balanced synergy between the physical and the digital space. The key component of the experience is the "video of a digitally-rendered wooden gate opening and shutting to reveal different scenes." The narrative depicts the Deoksugung Palace's past a century ago. The next image reveals a "more ornate door" and later, an Internet chat room.
