Karuizawa Distillers (KDI) has broken ground on its second facility, the Furaliss Distillery, in Furano, Hokkaido, featuring an integrated visitor destination designed for immersive whisky experiences. The project, announced last year, is being developed in partnership with Seibu Group and Furano City to combine production with tourism and regional revitalisation.
Furaliss will sit in Furano’s cold, seasonal climate and aims to produce whiskies optimized for long-term maturation, with KDI positioning the site to complement—not copy—the Komoro Distillery’s style. Leadership includes co-founders Koji Shimaoka and Ian Chang, with Seibu Group providing strategic investment and local stakeholders supporting the build.
For consumers, Furaliss promises destination-led tasting, education and tourism tied to place-driven spirits, reflecting a broader trend of experiential luxury and terroir-forward whisky. The dual-distillery strategy shows how producers are using regional climates and hospitality partnerships to diversify expressions and deepen brand experiences.
