BindEthics introduced Ecohesive, a 100% bio-based, formaldehyde-free adhesive that has moved from laboratory development into industrial-scale production. Derived from purified industrial bio-waste, including brewing by-products, the adhesive was developed for engineered wood applications as an alternative to fossil fuel- and petrochemical-based resins.
The company has progressed to 40-litre production-grade batches, with a validated pathway to 2,000-litre manufacturing volumes. Ecohesive is designed as a drop-in solution compatible with existing industrial mixing and pressing equipment, supporting applications including furniture panels, construction boards, oriented strand board and acoustic panels. BindEthics said the technology could help make up to 90% of engineered wood products fully recyclable.
For manufacturers, Ecohesive offers a potential route to reduce formaldehyde-based resins without investing in new production infrastructure. The scale-up reflects growing demand for bio-based construction materials as stricter formaldehyde emission regulations place greater pressure on the engineered wood sector.
