Ford’s Universal EV Platform Pushes Compact Affordable Electric Pickups

Ford’s new Universal EV Platform marks a pivotal shift in its electric vehicle strategy, enabling the production of more affordable, scalable models. The first release from this platform, expected in 2027, will be a midsize four-door electric pickup with a starting price of around $30,000 and more interior space than the Toyota RAV4.

Central to the cost savings is a battery about 15 percent smaller than those used in comparable models, measuring around 51 kWh. By using lithium iron phosphate cells, Ford balances cost, safety, and durability without sacrificing usability. Production will take place in Louisville using an “assembly tree” manufacturing approach that requires 20 percent fewer parts and 40 percent fewer workstations. This streamlined process aims to improve efficiency, reduce complexity, and make electric vehicles more accessible to a broader range of consumers worldwide.
