Hongtao Zhou, an assistant professor at the School of Architecture at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, has taken an intriguing artistic approach to the creation of his 'Energy Wood' lamps.
Each of these sculptural wooden lamps were created from one single piece of American ash wood. American ash wood was chosen by Zhou to construct the Energy Lamp because of the abundance of material available because of damage done by emerald ash borer beetles.
Using a bandsaw tool, Zhou was able to strip thin individual wooden pieces and bend them using steam to create astounding visual forms. As the fibers of wood extend from the solid wooden block, they also play with the internal light embedded into the structure in an eye-catching and attractive manner.
